If you would like to contact your child’s class teacher then this can be done by contacting the school office to arrange a telephone meeting. You can also leave a message for us in your child’s learning journal which will be checked daily.

Your child will be assessed in their reading level using the program: Accelerated Reader. Your child will receive their first reading book at the correct level on Friday 11th September. After this, your child will be expected to read their book every night and have their reading journal signed daily. They will receive house points daily for their signed reading journal. You will then receive a new book every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Your child will take a quiz on the book they have read and we will record their scores for you in their reading journals. If your child does not pass the quiz, they will keep the reading book and we would encourage you to read the book again and check your child’s understanding of the book. E.g. “What happened? Why? What was the problem? Which character went to….? How was the character feeling? How do you know? What does …… mean?”

Homework ‘dip and dos’ will be posted onto jotter for the term. You can access the jotter platform through the website homepage and on our year 1 page. Please do let us know if you have any problems. Weekly learning will also be posted onto jotter in case your child has to work from home or isolate.

• PE will be on Wednesdays.
• Your child will need to bring in their kit for Tuesday 15th September at the latest. This kit will remain in school for the term and will be sent home with your child to be washed at the end of term.
• If your child wears earrings, please have them removed or taped up before school on a Wednesday.
• Please also ensure long hair is tied back.
Your child needs the correct Saint Michael’s PE kit, but please also provide jogging bottoms and a jumper as we will be outside as much as possible in the colder months. *Remember to clearly name each part of your child’s PE kit (including each shoe).

From Monday 21st September we will begin our weekly spellings. Spellings will be given to the children on a Monday for you to practice at home and then your child’s knowledge of their spellings will be checked on a Friday. Please do help your child to practice their spellings each week.

Jotter Learning Platform

At St Michael’s we subscribe to Jotter; the learning platform designed with primary schools in mind. Children are growing up in a fast-changing online world and we strive to ensure that they gain the essential skills both within and beyond school. Teachers will keep you up-to-date with your child’s learning. Your child will be able to download and upload work and complete tasks. There will be pages where much of what you see has been created by the children themselves. This is their chance to shine as they write content and collaborate on research.

Jotter gives children the opportunity to explore concepts such as wikis and blogs in a safe environment. We hope you enjoy using Jotter as much as we do. To log in please type in your child’s username and password. To obtain this information please speak to your class teacher.
