If you would like to contact us, please do phone the office and we can arrange a telephone appointment. Alternatively, we do check reading journals daily, please do leave us a message if you need to. We are also looking forward to meeting you on Wednesday 14th October for our parent meeting days, which will be Covid safe adhering to all guidelines. You will receive a letter for booking these.

Important information regarding Read, Write, Inc. and the missed year 1 phonics check (usually June)

We will be continuing to learn and recap our sounds ready for the phonics check, which we missed at the end of year one. This will be administered in term 2 and we will give you more information for this on our parent-meeting day – Wednesday 14th October.

Below are the sounds that your child should be able to recognise and read in real and nonsense words:

Homework

Homework ‘dip and dos’ will be posted onto jotter for the term. You can access the jotter platform through the website homepage and on our year 2 page. Please do let us know if you have any problems. Weekly learning will also be posted onto jotter in case your child has to work from home or isolate.
PE

·         PE will be on Tuesdays.

·         Your child will need to bring in their kit for Monday 14th September at the latest. This kit will remain in school for the term and will be sent home with your child to be washed at the end of term.

·         If your child wears earrings, please have them removed or taped up before school on a Tuesday.

Your child needs the correct Saint Michael’s PE kit, but please also provide jogging bottoms and a jumper as we will be outside as much as possible in the colder months.
Literacy  – Term 1 Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers

We will be reading Here We Are this term and we will be covering descriptive writing and information pages:

·         Descriptive writing – Sentence types, using finger spaces, using capital letters and full stops, using adjectives and simple metaphors to describe.

·         Information pages – Fact and opinion, giving instructions, verbs and nouns.

Term 2 – The Lonely Beast

  • Persuasive letter writing
  • Newspaper pages

 

Maths Term 1 

·         Numbers to 20 and 100 – place value, one more and one less, addition and subtraction within 20 and within 100.

·         Recapping number bonds to ten.

Term 2

  • Multiplication and division
  • Fractions

 

Religious Education

·         This term our RE topic is The Chosen People. We will be looking at significant figures in the Bible and their special characteristics (Abraham, Moses, Daniel).

In term 2 we will be exploring the Mysteries of the Holy Trinity.
Science

·         This term we will be covering animals including humans, looking especially at ourselves. We will be recapping the different animal groups from year 1, looking at how animals and humans grow, studying our body parts and their functions, how animals survive and how we keep healthy.

In term 2 we will be experimenting with different everyday materials to explore waterproof, absorbency, strength and their properties.
Topic (History and Geography) – Our Saint Michael’s Community

·         We will be covering our local area and the physical and human features within the area.

·         We will be looking at where we live and how to use and create maps.

·         We will also be recording seasonal data for our local area and comparing this with other places.
Art and Music

·         Term 1 -Using colour and line to create self-portraits. Term 2 – We’ll be exploring collage techniques in the style of Peter Phillips.

·         Term 1 – Using sounds and body percussion to demonstrate different objects and animals. Term 2 – Exploring how to use sounds and simple notations to learn and perform a new song, ‘Ho Ho Ho’ by Joanna Manana.
Computing

·         We will be using a new online program called Purple Mash. We will be coding this term.
Jigsaw – Term 1 – Being Me in My World (and keeping ourselves and others safe in school). Term 2 – Celebrating Differences – comparing ourselves to others and knowing that we are all special. We’ll also be exploring what bullying really means (several times on purpose) and what to do if we think bullying is happening.

 

Jotter Learning Platform

At St Michael’s we subscribe to Jotter; the learning platform designed with primary schools in mind. Children are growing up in a fast-changing online world and we strive to ensure that they gain the essential skills both within and beyond school. Teachers will keep you up-to-date with your child’s learning. Your child will be able to download and upload work and complete tasks. There will be pages where much of what you see has been created by the children themselves. This is their chance to shine as they write content and collaborate on research.

Jotter gives children the opportunity to explore concepts such as wikis and blogs in a safe environment. We hope you enjoy using Jotter as much as we do. To log in please type in your child’s username and password. To obtain this information please speak to your class teacher.
